IMPERIAL COUNTY: AN ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY WAITING TO HAPPEN!

Dear Community Leaders,

Year after year, with the highest unemployment in California one would think it is time that the political leadership in Imperial County join together as a “team effort” to help people get good jobs. At a recent League of Cities Division meeting, I expressed my 25-year passion for the economic health of Imperial County. I am convinced that Imperial County is an economic opportunity waiting to happen. I only wish the public and private leadership in Imperial County were as convinced as I am!

I hope the leadership will seize this opportunity to reduce the long-time hold unemployment has on your community! All the tools are in place …all you have to do is get the product (Imperial County) to market! It is imperative that Imperial County be seen in the market place as a great place to do business! Place marketing is essential. So what’s holding you back? The answer is you—you the cities and the county. Each city cannot get to market alone, but all of the cities and your county together can by investing some “meaningful dollars” into the Economic Development Marketing Strategy already in play.

To be successful in rural economic development you must close ranks and act as one place (County). Let’s call it “Team Imperial.” If you take the following steps and give yourself a 5-year time frame I believe you will be successful. The status quo and high unemployment should not be acceptable anymore!

Step 1- Read and understand the Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation (IVEDC) Market Strategy.

Step 2- Each City Council and the Board of Supervisors should adopt the IVEDC strategy.

Step 3- Adopt a “Jobs First” resolution and direct city and council staff to make
your city and county job-friendly and to cooperate fully with IVEDC.

Step 4- Make a minimum 5-year commitment to spend some real dollars for IVEDC as outlined in the IVEDC strategy for Imperial.

Economic development is an investment not an expense! It results in more jobs and revenues (profits) to the community.

Need help? Need information? Call me anytime.

Sincerely,
