This former Fort Ord tour begins with an overview upon boarding the bus. Tour leaders from the Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) will provide a regional geographic, socio-economic, and resue/recovery program introduction and context, highlighting the intimate linkages between the former Army infantry training center and its surrounding communities/region. Tour participants will gain an appreciation for the physical, economic and political transformation that has occurred since the base closed in 1994.
The tour will highlight key accomplishments including: the establishment and continued growth of California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB); the conversion of hundreds of acres of beachfront property to the Fort Ord Dunes State Park; the designation of the 14,500-acre Fort Ord National Monument; creation of the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery and the William Gourley VA/DoD Clinic; growth of new mixed-use developments (Dunes at Monterey Bay, Seahaven, and East Garrison) and more. The tour will also point out yet to be realized reuse and recovery program elements including: the growth of a R&D/light industrial park at the University of California Monterey Bay Science, Education and Technology (UCMBEST) Center; persistent blight in the form of still standing, dilapidated army barracks; and yet to be completed capital projects. The tour will be a fitting conclusion to the annual CALED conference as the reuse and economic recovery process at the former Fort Ord represents a microcosm of economic development challenges throughout California.
