California’s Missing Economic Partner in Agriculture and Food Policy: An Initiative to Harness the Latent Capacity of the Civic Economy

California is home to both an innovation and wealth building engine, but also some of the nation’s most pressing socio-economic challenges. The state has numerous obstacles in addressing its policy priorities, yet challenges endure in economically sustainable agriculture.

We make the case that the utilization of “civic economy” institutions (cooperatives, B-Corps, nonprofits, JPAs, etc) is overlooked in federal and state economic development policies and practices, impinging the capacity for local self-help economic development. We discuss the scale, scope, and impact of the institutions of the civic economy, and highlight specific cases of socio-economic impact. The presentation closes with a roadmap as to how UCDavis and UCANR are working to overcome these challenges to fill the economic development gap, and how state and local partners can assist.

Panelist:

  • Keith Taylor, Associate Professor of Cooperative Extension & Community Economic Development Department of Human Ecology, UCDavis & UC Cooperative Extension

_______________

CALED’s Webinar Wednesday is free for our members. For non-members the cost is $85.00 per webinar.

Attendees will need a Zoom account matching their registration email to view the webinar.

Please note, we now use the Zoom platform for our webinars. Please check with your IT department prior to the webinar to ensure you can access Zoom Webinar. Please reach out to Ian Gill  with any questions about accessing Zoom.

As we have integrated the Zoom platform with our membership software, you will need to register for the webinar with the same email that you will be using to log in to the webinar. Your email should also match the address you use for your CALED membership. CALED members can register at zero cost and the non-member fee is $85. CALED membership is for the individual, so you will have to pay if you are not a member, even if your organization is a member. The $85 attendance fee can apply towards membership. Please contact the CALED membership coordinator, Laura Cole Rowe at laura@caled.org, for details.

You will receive this link immediately via email upon completion of your registration.  The link that you receive is not sharable, so please have other CALED members from your organization who want to attend this webinar complete separate registrations.

It’s easiest to log in to your CALED account (bookmark the link for future use!) so that the software can prefill all of your information for the webinar.  You can edit the information when you register (for example, if you will be using your personal email for the webinar instead of your work email). You may also want to add the Zoom automatic email address (no-reply@zoom.us) to your contacts, to make sure it doesn’t go to spam, as well as updating to the latest version of Zoom.

If you need your log-in and/or password, please send a quick email to Ian Gill, Program & Database Manager at iangill@caled.org.

Please register no later than noon on the day of the webinar.

If you have ideas or would like to be considered to present on an upcoming webinar, please contact Helen Schaubmayer at helen@caled.org.
